# Small Business Saturday beat Cyber Monday by more than eleven to one.

For an independent jewelry store, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is the strongest local hook of the year — and it is won in the two weeks of posts before it, not on the morning itself. Here is what the numbers behind it actually measure, and the fortnight laid out day by day.

Small Business Saturday is an independent jeweler's strongest local hook:
35% of surveyed jewelers called it their best day; 3% said Cyber Monday.

Each figure below carries a label saying how much weight it can hold.
**[Measured]** means a named study with a real sample stands behind it.
**[Survey]** means a survey, with its sample size and its sponsor.
**[Trade]** means consistent trade reporting without a measurement.
**[Not measured]** means nobody has measured it.

One of a series at [myjewelrymarketing.com](https://myjewelrymarketing.com)
checking which parts of the advice given to independent jewelers anybody has
measured; the wider picture is in
[the state of independent jewelry retail in 2026](/blog/state-of-independent-jewelry-retail-2026),
and the case against markdowns on the day before is in
[Black Friday for independent jewelers](/blog/black-friday-for-independent-jewelers).

## When is Small Business Saturday in 2026?

**Saturday, November 28, 2026** — the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the day
after Black Friday. American Express started it in 2010 and still runs it:
the signage, the Shop Small branding and the spending surveys quoted every
year all come from the company, which is worth remembering when you read
the numbers below. That does not make it any less useful to a store with a
door on a street; it is the one shopping day of the season named for a
business like yours.

If you are reading this in the second week of November, the day is
nineteen days away and the content for it starts in five. That is on time.

## Which day of the big weekend matters most to independent jewelers?

When INSTORE asked jewelry store owners and managers which of the three
post-Thanksgiving days performed best for them in 2025, **62% said Black
Friday, 35% said Small Business Saturday and 3% said Cyber Monday.**
**[Survey — n=51]** Among independent jewelers, Small Business Saturday
beat Cyber Monday by more than eleven to one.

Two honest qualifications. Fifty-one stores is a small survey, so read it
as a direction rather than a benchmark. And Black Friday still came first
— which is why [the previous post in this series](/blog/black-friday-for-independent-jewelers)
treats Friday as a day to be worth the visit rather than a day to skip.
What the survey settles is the comparison most holiday calendars get wrong:
the online day built for national retailers barely registers for a
jeweler, and the local day does.

## How much do people spend on Small Business Saturday?

American Express's own survey put consumer-reported spending at small
businesses on Small Business Saturday 2025 at **an estimated $18 billion**,
down from an estimated $22 billion in 2024. **[Survey — n=2,945,
sponsor-commissioned]**

![$18 BILLION — consumer-reported Small Business Saturday spending in 2025, down from $22 billion in 2024. A sponsor survey of self-reported spending, not receipts. Source: American Express / Teneo, n=2,945](/covers/small-business-saturday-jewelry-store-18bn.webp)

Read that figure for what it is. It comes from a one-day online survey run
by Teneo for American Express on the day after the event, and American
Express states plainly that it is self-reported and **does not reflect
actual receipts or sales**. It covers every kind of small business,
restaurants included; no part of it is jewelry. It is the best available
sense of scale, it is published by the company that owns the day, and it
fell by about a fifth last year. None of that is a reason to ignore the
day. It is a reason not to plan your Saturday around a national total.

## Why it is a first-visit day rather than a sales day

The more useful numbers in the sponsor's surveys are about behaviour, not
dollars. Of the consumers who shopped at a small independent retailer on
Small Business Saturday 2024, **85% shopped in-store**, and **66% strongly
agreed they had found a small business or independent restaurant they were
likely to return to and become a regular customer of**. **[Survey —
n=2,601, sponsor-commissioned]**

![66% — Small Business Saturday shoppers in 2024 who strongly agreed they had found a small business they were likely to return to as a regular. Source: American Express / Teneo, n=2,601](/covers/small-business-saturday-jewelry-store-66.webp)

Put that beside the pillar's central finding — independent jewelry sales
rising while the number of people coming through the door falls — and the
day's real job becomes clear. **Small Business Saturday is the one day of
the season when strangers go out looking for a store like yours.** The sale
on the day matters less than the name, the wish list and the reason to come
back in December. Nobody has measured how many of those first visits a
jewelry store turns into a customer, so treat that as the goal, not a
forecast. **[Not measured]**

## The two weeks before it, day by day

The day is won in the posts before it, because the point is that people
plan to come. This is the fortnight from **Saturday, November 14** to the
day itself. The formats are the ones with measured reach behind them; the
dates and cadence are trade convention. **[Trade]**

**Saturday, November 14 — two weeks out.** Create a Facebook Event for
November 28 and share it to the page. Events generate notifications to the
people who respond, which a feed post does not. **[Trade]** Say what is
happening on the day in one line: hours, what is on, and the one thing worth
coming for.

**Tuesday, November 17 — the album.** A multi-photo album of the pieces
made or chosen in-house: the bench, the estate case, the custom work. On a
page under 5,000 followers an album out-reaches a Reel about 8.5 times to
your own audience. **[Measured]** The table is in
[why photo albums beat Reels for small jewelry pages](/blog/why-photo-albums-beat-reels-for-small-jewelry-pages).

**Wednesday, November 18 — the Reel.** Fifteen seconds, upright, opened
with your own voice saying what is happening on the 28th. Speech in the
first three seconds is the biggest retention lever measured on Facebook
Reels, and the full spec is in
[the holiday Reels post](/blog/holiday-reels-for-jewelry-stores).
**[Measured]**

**Thursday, November 19 — who you are.** A customer story or a staff
photograph with two sentences on how long the store has been there. The
Saturday shopper is choosing a small business on purpose; tell them which
one you are.

**Saturday, November 21 — one week out.** The plan for the day, in full:
times, what is on, parking, and the neighbours. If other independents on
your street are open, a joint post naming them reaches each store's
followers. Tagging another business is not the tag-a-friend mechanic that
[breaks Facebook's promotion rules](/blog/facebook-holiday-giveaway-rules);
asking customers to tag friends to enter something is.

**Tuesday, November 24 — the gift guide.** The week's gift-guide album,
by persona or price band, with the pieces and prices in the post, as
[the holiday plan](/blog/jewelry-store-holiday-marketing-plan) lays out.

**Wednesday, November 25 — the reminder.** A short post: Saturday, your
hours, one photograph.

**Thursday, November 26 — Thanksgiving.** A plain thank-you, or nothing.

**Friday, November 27 — Black Friday.** Your Friday posts, ending with one
line about tomorrow.

**Saturday, November 28 — the day.** A Reel from the floor in the first
hour, posted the same day. Photographs through the day, with permission
from anyone in them. Reply to every comment: it is the one zero-cost
tactic with a measured Facebook lift, about **+9.5%** in reactions across a
million-post study. **[Measured]**

**Sunday, November 29 — the thank-you.** An album of the day and a line
for everybody who came in for the first time. It is the post the new
customers see next.

![Timeline: the fortnight before Small Business Saturday. Nov 14 — create the Facebook Event. Nov 17 — the album. Nov 18 — the Reel, in your own voice. ## What to have on the day

The posts bring people; the store has to give them a reason to come back.
In order of how directly they serve a first visit: **[Trade]**

1. **Wish lists.** A first visit that ends with a written wish list is a December sale to whoever reads it.
2. **Something to do.** A free cleaning and inspection at the counter while they browse — the two-week format in [the events post](/blog/jewelry-store-event-ideas) — puts a stranger's own jewelry in your hands, which is the start of a relationship rather than a transaction.
3. **A small event.** The Small Business Saturday hunt in the events post wanted five weeks of notice, so for this year the honest version is smaller: a coffee table, an engraving station, or a maker from down the street with a table by the door.
4. **A way to stay in touch.** A newsletter sign-up, an appointment for December, or simply asking them to follow the page.

## What this article does not tell you

- **Nothing here is jewelry-specific except the INSTORE survey**, and that is fifty-one stores. **[Survey — n=51]**
- **The spending figures are the sponsor's own self-reported surveys**, not sales data, and they cover restaurants as well as shops.
- **No study measures what social media content does for Small Business Saturday traffic** at a jewelry store or any other small retailer. The fortnight above is built from measured format findings and trade convention, not from a measured campaign. **[Not measured]**

## What does this mean for the independent jeweler?

It means the Saturday after Thanksgiving deserves real planning, and Cyber
Monday does not. For most of the jewelers who answered, Black Friday was
the bigger day, but Saturday is the one day of the season when shoppers go
out looking for an independent on purpose — and on the sponsor's own
figures, two-thirds of them strongly agreed they had found somewhere they
were likely to come back to. For a store whose problem is fewer people
through the door, that is the right day to be ready for.

It also means you can stop worrying about the national total. A survey
estimate that rose to $22 billion and fell to $18 billion says nothing
about your street. What decides your Saturday is whether the people within
a few miles knew two weeks ago what you were doing that day, and whether
the visit gave them a reason to return in December.

## What's the solution?

Five things a store can do starting this week:

1. **Create the Facebook Event on November 14**, two weeks out, and say in one line what is worth coming for.
2. **Post one album and one Reel in the week of November 16**, both about what is made or chosen in your store, with your own voice in the Reel.
3. **Name your neighbours on November 21.** A joint post with the other independents on your street, with no tag-to-enter mechanic in it.
4. **Plan the day around first visits:** wish lists, a cleaning and inspection at the counter, and a way to stay in touch.
5. **Post on the day and the day after**, reply to every comment, and judge it by wish lists written and new names, not by the till alone.

![Checklist: Small Business Saturday, two weeks out. 1. Create the Facebook Event on November 14. 2. Post one album and one Reel in the week of November 16. 3. Name your neighbours in a joint post on November 21. 4. Plan the day around first visits. 5. Post on the day and the day after, and reply to every comment. The Saturday plans My Jewelry Marketing makes for the stores we work with
follow the same fortnight: the Event goes up two weeks out, the album and
the Reel are made in advance from the store's own pieces, and the
day-after post is written before the day so it goes out while the new
customers still remember the visit. How we work is at
[myjewelrymarketing.com](https://myjewelrymarketing.com).

## The short version

Small Business Saturday falls on November 28, 2026. Among independent
jewelers surveyed by INSTORE, 35% named it their best day of the 2025
weekend against 3% for Cyber Monday, with Black Friday first at 62% — a
small survey of 51 stores, but the direction is clear. American Express,
which runs the day, estimates consumer-reported spending at $18 billion in
2025, down from $22 billion, from self-reported surveys that do not
reflect actual sales. Its more useful finding is behavioural: 85% of the
day's small-retailer shoppers went in-store and 66% strongly agreed they
had found somewhere they were likely to return to. Treat it as a
first-visit day, start posting two weeks out with an Event, an album and a
Reel, and judge it on wish lists and new names.
